DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

The annual SRD (Skywarn Recognition Day) Special Event was held this past weekend.  As an experimental test an SES (Special Event Station) on Packet Radio was set up in conjunction with the weekly State Wide DAREN Net.  The SES operated from about 8:00 pm on Thursday to about 8:00 am this morning.  Knowing that several Amateur Radio operators wouldn't get the word about the SES, and the changing of the callsign from "NET" to "W8W" for the SES, we decided to set up a second Packet station with the callsign of "NET".  We didn't want anyone to miss out on getting checked in the net/s.  Several Packet operators connected to both "W8W" and "NET".  If you checked into either callsign you will get credit for the State Wide DAREN Net.  A report will be sent to the Ted Jackobson, W8KVK, who asked to have the SES setup over the weekend.  For DAREN users who chase SRD certificates, they may request an SRD Registration Number via the National SRD website: https://www.weather.gov/crh/skywarnrecognition   You can also find information on the website: https://qrz.com/db/w8w    Ted also wanted to use the participation of the SES to exercise cross linking from the Southeast Ohio Packet Network: https://w8kvk.com/D9/D9-Packet-Map.pdf system, to the DAREN of WV system.

There were at least 45 Packet stations that checked into the State Wide DAREN / NWS SES Net using the callsign of "W8W".  Some of them are new to the DAREN system.  For those who are new to DAREN, and have never checked into the State Wide DAREN Net, or experimented with the DAREN of WV system, they are more than welcome to look around the system anytime they wish.

The new callsigns to the nets were: WD8JFT, K8AL, AB8BN, KY8C, N8WJ, KB3RDR, N2LC, N8MXX, and KE8EC.  KE8EC, isn't completely new to the DAREN system, he checked into the State Wide DAREN Net once on March 19th, 1996.  I want to welcome him back.  I also want to welcome Don Willams, N8NUS, back to Packet Radio and the DAREN system.  Don, who lives in Williamstown, just across the river from Marietta, Ohio, has been missing from the DAREN Net since February 14, 2009. Since the Washington County, OH, NODE/PBBS of WASHOH/MRTAOH was the station Don used to use to be on the DAREN system has been down for several months, and Don wanted to participate in the NWS SES, he helped me get the WASHOH/MRTAOH station back into operation yesterday.  I think the experiment of tying the two systems together was a success.  Those who crossed over from the Southeast Ohio Packet Network to the DAREN system are more than welcome to do it on regular basis, and participate in the weekly State Wide DAREN Net of WV as often as they can.  The State Wide DAREN Net will be back to using the callsign of "NET".
