DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio “Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:  wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A Statewide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

Well, it's Groundhogs Day.  I don't think it really matters, if he sees his shadow or not, we are going to have six more weeks of weather.  I still need to put three more sections on the tower the Wood County Emergency Communications group is building.  I still have several hilltop DAREN stations to work on, and I’m refreshing myself on doing the chores around the house that I haven't done for many years.  So, when the weather gets better, I'll be able to work outside on several activities.

There were 35 check-ins to the Statewide DAREN Net this week.  Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, who's been participating in the net since October 14, 1995, has completed 500 check-ins and will be receiving his certificate.  There was one new check-in to the Statewide Net this week, and that was Shane Brannan, KE8NCX, from Washington, WV.  I want to welcome Shane to the DAREN system, and hope he participates in the net as often as he can.  For those who don't know it, there are two other Packet Radio nets that happen during the week.  On Sunday evening around 8:00 pm, the Wood County Emergency Communications group holds a District 3 ARES Net on the DAREN system.  The NCS station callsign is DEC3.  On Tuesday evening around 8:00 pm, the PARK (Parkersburg Amateur Radio Klub) also holds a Packet net on the DAREN system.  The callsign of the PARK Net is PKBNET.  NODEs that can connect to DEC3 and PKBNET are the same as the Statewide DAREN Net.  Conard Richardson, KE8HLU, and I are holding the additional nets to try and get more Amateur Radio operators interested in Packet Radio.  If you or your group holds a Packet Radio net at any time, let me know so we can spread the word.  We need to get more Packet Radio operators  active to keep Packet Radio alive and growing again.
