DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A Statewide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

I hope everyone had a safe and Happy New Year.  The new year came in even though I didn't stay awake to watch the ball come down.  Now that the holidays are over I can get things ready for the first meeting of the year for the Wood County Emergency Communications group.  The meeting will be held on January 7th.

Conard Richardson, KE8HLU, has been working on his Packet-to-Internet system, WAVEWV.  The WAVEWV system is now arranged to accept messages from other PBBSs or Mailboxes that are set up to Auto-Forward from one PBBS to another on the DAREN system.  Many years ago the DAREN system had several PBBSs that would automatically forward messages around the system until they could deliver the message.  There is one major thing needed to be in the address of the message for it to start auto forwarding.  You have to have an at (@) sign in the address, example: S WA8LLM@PKBGWV.  If you want to send a message through the Internet you need to use the E-Mail address, example; S KC8HAI@YAHOO.COM.  One of the main things in the Auto-Forwarding system is to make sure that the PBBS you are using is set up to Auto-Forward.  There are several commands in the forwarding PBBS TNC that needs to be set up.  Each forwarding PBBS station needs to be programed to forward a message to another PBBS, that's set up for Auto-Forwarding.  At the present time there are only five DAREN PBBSs that are able to Auto-Forward, and they are HRVLWV, PKBGWV, PKBGWV-1, ELIZWV, and the Packet-to-Internet station of WAVEWV.  To set up Auto-Forwarding, the commands of HTEXT, PBFORWRD, PBHOLD, and PBKILLFW, need to be entered into the Auto- Forwarding TNC.  The HTEXT should have something like; HTEXT HRVLWV or HTEXT HRVLWV V RANDWV.  The PBFORWRD should be (next PBBS in chain) AFTER 1, example PKBGWV AFTER 1.  The PBHOLD should be set to OFF, and PBKILLFW should be set to ON.  If the message is addressed correctly, the messages will be forwarded to each PBBS in the chain until it reaches the WAVEWV Packet-to-Interface station. From there will be placed on the Internet.  If the message has to pass through a PBBS that has the MYCALL callsign, or the @ PBBS, in the message address, the message will stop and be posted at that location.  There may still be some bugs that need to be worked out, but it does work.

There were 31 check-ins to the Statewide DAREN Net this week.  Conard Richardson, KE8HLU, who has been participating in the net since January 20, 2018, has completed 50 check-ins, and will be receiving his certificate.
