DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A Statewide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

I am tired.  We just got home from the Volcano Days festival.  We stayed at Mountwood Park from Thursday until today.  The weather was pretty good for the weekend.  It did rain for a little while Saturday, but it didn't seem to hurt the crowd.  Since there were several people already there, a lot of them came into the BINGO tent to stay dry.  While they were there, they play some of the games, so it helped us.  The Parkersburg Amateur Radio Klub operated their Special Event Station from about 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM on Saturday.  The bands weren't very good in the morning until after the rain.  They made about 84 or 85 contacts.  They said that was about what they did last year.  While I was going through the Flea Market I found some short eye bolts that I can use for a tower that will be going up shortly.  The bolts will be used for the anchors.  Joe Thomas, N8MEV, extended the bolts to about 30 inches by welding pieces of metal onto them.  The tower will be about 100 feet tall and will be used for back-up stations for some of the local voice repeaters and Packet Radio on the DAREN system, and any other Amateur Radio related projects.  Since there is no commercial electricity at the tower site, we are going to put a wind Generator on the top of the tower and some Solar Panels to keep the batteries charged. Bill Davidson, N8JXO, has been wanting to start the project for the last year or so, now that we have anchors, and have located where we want to place the tower, we can start.  We're hoping to have the first half of the tower up before the snow starts.

The Parkersburg/Wood County Hamfest will be held in a couple weeks on October 12th.  Information on the Hamfest can be found on the www.wc8ec.org website. Hope to see you there.

There were only 30 check-ins to the Statewide DAREN Net this week.  There was one station that checked into the net with the callsign of NOCALL.  The station checked into the net at around 8:45 PM on Saturday.  If you checked into the net at around that time, don't see your call on the Net Announcement this coming week, and think it may have been you, let me know so that I can get your net participation records caught up.
