DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A Statewide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
It's been another quiet week. The weather has been great and no rain. We had a good weekend for the Chic-Fil-A Cross Country races. There were over 1305 students from at least 56 High School and Middle Schools in West Virginia and Ohio. There were eight races at the event. There were very few medical incidents, but there were a few runners that couldn’t finish the complete race. There were 11 Amateurs that provided the safety communications, spotting the runners as they approached the line, and the operating of the race clocks. The official told us there will only be one more cross-country meet this summer instead of four. The next event will be on October 8th and it will only have two races.
The next big event for the Wood County Emergency Communications group will be the BINGO games at the Volcano Days Festival and Engine Show on September 27th, 28th, and 29th. The communications group will also be providing the radio communications for the event officials. The Parkersburg Amateur Radio Klub will be operating their Special Event Station on Saturday, September 28th. Between now and the start of Volcano Days I will be modifying the BINGO tables by cutting them down to 16 inches, which should be all that is needed. They are 24 inches now, and they take up too much room. Maybe I'll have some time to work on some Packet stations and get them back in operation before the weather starts getting bad. I will need to take some time out to get ready for the Parkersburg/Wood County Hamfest that will be held on October 12th. We have been collecting door prizes, and Terry Mills, KC8TUE, says that door prizes from different vendors are starting to show up at his doorstep.
There were only 27 check-ins to the Statewide DAREN Net this week. Julie Paugh, KB3URS, who's been participating in the net since November 24, 2012, has completed 200 check-ins and will be receiving her certificate. One station checked into the net with the call sign of "NOCALL". That station checked into the net at about 11:20 am on Saturday. If you checked into the net at about that time, and think it may have been you, let me know so that I can get your net participation records caught up. I may go back through the records and see who usually checks in but hasn't checked in for a couple weeks.
