DAREN News are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
I just got back from the Athens, Ohio, Hamfest. I picked up a few things that I thought I might need. The Jackson County Amateur Radio Club will be holding their Hamfest next Sunday, May 5th. The Hamfest will be held at the Ripley Middle School in Ripley. I'm planning on going to the Hamfest and then stop by the Jackson County NODE/PBBS of JACKWV/RPLYWV site and change out the station. I've been working on a station that will take the place of the one that is off the air. I'm finishing the power supply that will be used with the station. The power supply wouldn’t handle the full power 100 watts of the radio, so I backed the power down. Even with the power backed all the way down it is still putting out about 80 Watts, but that's about 65 Watts more than the original one. I'm going to set the Jackson County station up at my house until Sunday, when I take it down to Jackson County. I'm going to program another TNC for the Wirt County NODE/PBBS of WIRTWV/ELIZWV. I'm just hoping the only problem with the Wirt County station is a loss of memory. Since Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, and I have upgraded a bunch of Kantronics KPC-3 TNCs, we're planning to just swap out the Wirt County TNC. Both the Wirt County and Jackson stations will have Version 8.2 software with 512K of Memory.
Yesterday 13 Amateurs provided the safety communications for the race officials of the Vienna River Road Fun Run. Amateurs were stationed at the each of the Run and Walk Mile Markers, and some of the intersections along the race route.
Next Saturday, May 4th, several members of Wood County Emergency Communications will be holding a One Day Technician Class radio class. The class will be held at the Marietta, Ohio, Memorial Hospital. There are several employees of the hospital that are wanting to get their licenses.
There were only 29 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Since I've been busy with the Vienna Fun Run, getting the Jackson County and Wirt County DAREN stations ready to go back on the air, and getting ready for the One Day Technician class, I haven't had time to print up Check-in Certificates. That may happen in the next week or so.
