DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
I don't have much to write about this week. I've been busy getting all the training material ready for a One Day Technician Class radio class which our communications group held yesterday. Since the Technician Question Pool changed last July, we haven't had any classes, and I hadn't been over the new questions. Even though we just go over the question and answers in the class, there are some things I have to explain, so I put together a Power Point for those questions. I didn't get the new Power Point caught up, but it was good enough for the class. There were 13 hopefuls in the class yesterday, and 10 of them pasted their exams. We even had one person who came up from North Carolina to take the class. He says that no one does a one day class in his area. He wasn't a stranger to the area since his Uncle, Matt Dolye, KC8FSI, lives in Parkersburg, and he come to visit often. We had three volunteer fire fighters and two Health Department workers in the class.
Conard Richardson, KE8HLU, is still working the bugs out of his Packet-to- Internet system. When any one runs into a problem Conard is right on top of it. He doesn't have it up all of the time yet, but when he does it will be a great asset to the DAREN system. If you want to see how it works, when it's up, you can connect to the system through the Ritchie County NODE of RITCWV, or the Wood County NODE of WOODWV. The system name is WAVEWV. It only takes a couple steps to get to the mailbox, but you can figure that out when you connect in. To send an E-Mail all you need to do is use the "S" command followed by the E-Mail address. Example: S WA8LLM@YAHOO.COM. When Conard has the system up, and is around the house, he is watching for any problems. If you find a problem, let Conard or me know. His system also has a Chatroom on it, but I haven't played with that yet.
There were 38 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, needs only one more check-in to make 450. There was one new participant to the net this week and that was Jeffrey Boden, KJ4YYA, from Louisville, KY. I want to welcome Jeffrey to the DAREN Net and system. I hope he will learn his way around the network, and check into the DAREN Net as often as possible.
