DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
I hope everyone has a safe and Happy New Year. Well, we didn't have a white Christmas, just a muddy one.
During Field Day, messages that leave the Field Day site by radio can be counted as traffic and get extra bonus points. This year, we tried to pass traffic by it leaving the Field Day site via radio and going through the internet. We had problems and wasn't able to get it done. Conard Richardson, KE8HLU, who plays with computers and does some programming and I talked about a way to connect to the internet without having some of the problems. Conard has been putting together a system that will allow easy connection to the internet. He hasn't got it completely done, but has tested it. He sent me a message to my E-Mail address by using Packet Radio over the DAREN system. When I got the message, I sent a reply back, which he was able to receive over his system. He hasn't been leaving his system on the air for now. I've talked to Conard after the tests and he says he still has some things he wants to do to his system before he puts it on the air permanently. Since he uses his 2 Meter station for both Packet and Voice, he will need a dedicated station on the DAREN system. I told him we can come put with another station and antenna. When he gets his system on the air, I've pass on the information that will allow anyone access to it. If I can talk him into it, we may put a couple or three systems like it on the air to make sure there is at least one available.
I'm still working on the racing clocks that I'm rebuilding. I have the main mother boards finished and working great. I just need to finish putting together the seven inch, seven segment display panels. Within a month I should have all of the clocks ready for the racing season.
Since I've change the way that I keep track of everyone check-ins, I will need to figure out a way of posting the total number of check-ins like I used to at the end of the year. I will post the Total Check-ins once I get them put together.
There were 33 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Ken "Cappy" Caplinger, who has been participating in the net since January 16, 2016, has completed 100 check-ins, and will be receiving his certificate. Jeffrey Hensley, WD4VA, needs only one more check-in to make 350.
