DAREN News are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State-Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
I'm sorry to report that we lost another Amateur and DAREN operator. Brad Carabine, KC8TYU, the son of Terry Mills, KC8TUE, passed away on Wednesday, October 31st. Brad has been Amateur Radio operator since May 15, 2002 and started operating Packet as soon as he got his license. Brad was an active member of Wood County Emergency Communications and was a Paramedic for the ambulance services in Wood County. We are going to miss Brad and all the services he has provided.
Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, and I met with Frank Hughes, WD8DEP, in Clarksburg on Tuesday and brought home a bunch of used, and some new, computer equipment. We have already gone through a lot of the equipment and looking at how some of it can be used. Sammy has already got some of the systems working. I want to thank Frank, and all of those who gave him the equipment to bring to us. We will put a lot of it to good use. Some of the things that can't be used or fixed will be taken apart and used for other projects.
If you haven't already changed your clocks back from Day Light Savings Time, now is the time to do it. Also, don't forget to change the time in your TNCs (Terminal Node Controllers). While you are changing the time in the TNC, now would be a good time to give them a SOFT RESET, which basically means turn them OFF and back ON. Giving them a SOFT RESET will remove most minor problems that build up in them since the last time. Also, don't forget to change the batteries in your Smoke and CO Detectors.
There were only 28 check-ins to the State-Wide DAREN Net this week. Judy Peterson, N8UFQ, needs only one more check in to make 1350.
