DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

Well, I got the 512K Static Ram Memory Chips from JAMECO Electronics on Thursday, now I'll start upgrading some of my spare TNCs.  I still need to get to some of the remote sites, like the Roane County NODE/PBBS of ROANWV/SPNCWV, and the Wetzel County NODE/PBBS of WETZWV/NMARWV, and get them back on the air. Those two TNCs will be the first to be upgraded to 512K.  We still have a few more weeks of bad weather, but as soon as it get better I want to get those two stations back in operation.  Even though the Ritchie County NODE/PBBS of RITCWV/HRVLWV is working, it still needs to have a NODE Channel problem corrected.  When I work on it, I'll upgrade it to a 512K memory chip.

I got an E-Mail from Craig Hinshaw, KE8IFC, in Ft. Recovery, Ohio.  Craig said that he would like to expand the DAREN system into Ohio.  He is planning to install a couple Packet stations in Ohio.  I don't have any additional information about the stations, but when and if I do, I'll pass it on.  I want to thank Craig for trying to help the DAREN system grow.

Does anyone do any building any more?  I still like to build all kinds of projects.  My nephew Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, and I have been into several projects. One of our most interesting projects is working on a 2.4 GHz MMHS (Multi Mode High Speed) Mesh system.  We have reading on how it works and building antennas to get paths between the remote stations.  The 2.4 GHz system is about like Packet Radio except it operates a lot faster packet rate.  About anything you can do on the Internet, you can do on the MMHS system, including connecting it to the Internet.  If anyone is interested in trying to put together a such a system, let me know.  We are still working on it, and would like to have some ideas.

There were 33 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week.  Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, who has been participating in the net since October 14, 1995, has completed 400 check-ins and will be receiving his certificate.  I notice when I posted the Net Announcement last week that I had placed the net date as March 24, which should have said March 3.
