DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
After I wrote about the 512K Static Ram Memory Chip from JAMECO Electronics last week, I decided to order some myself. They should be here by Thursday, and I can start upgrading some of the Kantronics KPC-3 and KPC-3 Plus TNCs that I have sitting around. And, from another company I ordered some DB-9 plugs to make up some radio-to-TNC Cables for various Hand Held and Mobile transceivers.
Rod Godfrey, W8RKG, in Calhoun County, said he is holding a One Day Technician Radio Class in Grantsville on May 12th. He said he has between 20 and 25 people who are interested in getting their license. He has asked the Wood County Emergency Communications group to do the class and the VE Testing. He said the class is open to anyone wishing to take it. I don't have Rods E-Mail address right at hand, but if you know of anyone who is interested, they can contact me. I'll be working with Rod over the next couple months.
Coordinators for different activities are already getting a hold of the Wood County group to provide the safety communications on their events. The Challenge at Mountwood Mountain Bike race will be held at Mountwood Park on April 8th. There will be a Chic-Fil-A Road Run in Parkersburg on May 19th. The date hasn't been given to us yet on the River Road Fun Run in Vienna, but it will bill be held in April. The date may be April 15th.

It was a good thing I got my chain saw ready last week. I had to cut one tree out of my driveway before I could get to town for a Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting.
Don't forget the 34th Annual Charleston Area Hamfest will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018, from 9 AM to 2 PM. The location of the Hamfest will be the Charleston Civic Center, 200 Civic Center Drive, in Charleston. Admission to the Hamfest is $7 with those at 12 years old and under free. You can reserve your tables early by contacting Rick Cummings, WV8RC at: rickwv8rc@gmail.com or at (304) 610-6404. Setup is on Friday, March 23rd from 4 PM to 8 PM, and Saturday from 7 AM to 8:30 AM. There were 37 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, needs only one more check-in to make 400.
