DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
I've been looking around the shop for the Kantronics KPC-3 Plus with Version 9.0 firmware. I want to upgrade it to 512K of memory and use it to put together a NODE/PBBS to replace the Wood County NODE/PBBS of WOODWV/PKBGWV. I'm going to put the TNC on a 100 Watt Motorola MaraTrac. Maybe next winter when the temperature gets below 30 degrees it will stay on the air. The reason I want to use the 9.0 Version firmware is because the PBBS can be programed to have more than one connection at a time. The 9.0 Version can be programed to have as many as 10 connections at a time. I figure 5 connections should be enough, since that's what the current one is set up for. While talking about upgrading the memory of the KPC-3 or KPC-3 Plus to 512K, don't forget, it allows for a lot more messages to posted in the PBBS, and more NODE channels. You can get the 512K Static Ram Memory Chip from JAMECO Electronics. Their web address is: www.jameco.com. The cost of the chip in the February 2018 catalog is $12.95. If you buy 10 or more they are $10.95 each. That would be the way to buy them. Several SYSOPs could go together and order a bunch of them. Here is the JAMECO Part Number and Product number for the 512K Static Ram: 157358 & 628512LP-70.
Not much else to report this week. I guess I'll get my chain saw ready to start cutting trees out of my driveway. With the ground so soft, I'm sure there will be some trees down.
There were 36 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. I'll sure be glad when spring and summer gets here. I wasn't able to make it to town this week due to the weather. We had a lot of rain and the flooding stopped me from getting to the Post Office to mail the certificates to those waiting for them. They say the rain is going to stop and the creeks and rivers should start going down. I'm planning to go to town Wednesday to a meeting, I should be able to get the certificates mailed then.
