DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
Well, the Wood County NODE/PBBS of WOODWV/PKBGWV has been on and off the air again. When the temperature is below 30 degrees is goes down. I thought I might be able to correct the problem by letting it transmit often enough to keep it warm. I set the BEACON on the TNC to transmit every five minutes, but that didn't work. The problem must be in the receive section of the radio since it does transmit the BEACON okay, but there is no connection when it's cold. I guess I will just have to get another station ready to change it out. I had already planned on changing out the radio this summer, but it looks like it may need to be changed out sooner. I'm not able to connect to the Randolph County NODE of RANDWV from WOODWV even though the antenna is over 1000 feet above sea level. But, I can connect to RANDWV direct from my house and the antenna is only about 900 feet.
I had a wonderful telephone call from Mark Sweitzer, KD8MIV, last Sunday evening. Mark and I talked for quite awhile about the Tucker County NODE/PBBS of TUCKWV/DAVIWV and Packet Radio in general. He said that he changed out the TNC on the Tucker County station and thinks that may have been the problem it had been having.
I've received some E-Mails from Jim Woodford, KC8MLK, this past week so I figured he must be home from the hospital. He was also able to check into the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Then I heard on the WV FONE Net today that Jim came home on Tuesday. I hope he is getting healed up okay.
There were 38 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Jeffrey Hensley, WD4VA, who has been participating in the net since August 27, 2011, has completed 300 check-ins. I was having a problem with my certificate printer a couple weeks ago and I wasn't able to print certificates, but Tuesday when I turned it on, it seemed to work okay, so I better get the three certificates that I need printed up, if it's still working.
