DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

We just got home from Mountwood Park where WCEC (Wood County Emergency Communications) was operating the BINGO games at the Volcano Days Festival. The weather was good with no rain, but the high temperatures and humidity made it a little sticky.  Even with the good weather the crowd seemed to be down a little, but it was still a good weekend.

On October 3rd and 5th at 5:00 pm, the WCEC group will be providing the communications and the racing clocks for some more High School/Middle School Cross Country races.  It will be a challenge on both dates since on the 3rd WCEC will be holding their business meeting at 7:00 pm.  On the 5th they are supposed to be setting up a couple 24 by 40 foot canopies at the same time for a wedding.  The wedding will be on Saturday, but they would like to have the canopies set up on Thursday.  I'm sure we can work out both events.

The Parkersburg Amateur Radio Klub operated a Special Event Station on Saturday for the Volcano Days Festival at Mountwood Park.  They operated the station from about 10:00 am to about 5:00 pm using the call sign of W8PAR.  They said that 20 Meters wasn't very good where they were at, so they just operated on 40 Meters the whole time.  They made a little over 190 contacts, and I think I heard them say they got calls from 40 states and Canada.  They are thinking about doing it again next year.

Don't forget the Parkersburg/Wood County Hamfest on October 14th.  The Hamfest will be at the Wood County 4-H Camp Grounds on Butcher Bend Road in Mineral Wells.  You can get to Mineral Wells by using Exit 170 off of the I-77 Interstate.  There will be signs pointing the way.  It's only about 5 miles from the interstate.  For more information check out the WCEC website: www.wc8ec.org

There were 32 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week.  Delmas Hartley, N8JYS, who has been participating in the net since January 14, 1995, has completed 350 check-ins and will be receiving his certificate.
