DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

I have sad news this week.  We have lost a couple more Amateur Radio operators this week.  One of the Amateurs was Bill Bayless, KB8HEK.  Bill used to be active Packet and on the State Wide DAREN Net.  Bill was the Fire Chief of Ellenboro Volunteer Fire Department and the Chairman of the Ritchie County Local Emergency Planning Committee.  For a couple years he was the Chief of the Navy/Marine MARS.  He was active with the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), plus was active with a lot of other activities and organizations.  Bill passed away yesterday while in a nursing home in Harrisville.  The other Amateur that we lost was Mark Leatham, KR5N, from Marietta, Ohio.  As far as I know, Mark was never on Packet Radio, but was active on the HF Bands.  Mark helped Wood County Emergency Communications with several of the events where they provided safety communications for events like the Parkersburg Half Marathon, the Challenge at Mountwood Mountain Bike races, and the High School/Middle School Cross Country races.  Mark passed away today after being in the hospital for about a month.  Both of these Amateurs will be missed.

I do have some good news though.  Kenneth "Cappy" Caplinger, WV8KDC, was selected to be the Amateur of The Year at the West Virginia ARRL State Convention this year.  I missed the presentation since I wasn't able to make it to the convention.  I want to congratulate Kenny on the award.  I hope everyone who made it to the convention had a great time.

There were 35 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Gene Roy, N8ER, who has been participating in the net since May 1, 1993, has completed 1250 check-ins.  And, Tricia Magyarosi, KC8VLI, who has been participating in the net since December 28, 2002, has completed 700 check-ins.  Both of these operators will be receiving their certificates.  I'm running late on getting certificates printed up, and there are several operators who are waiting for them.  Delmas Hartley, N8JYS, needs only one more check-in to make 350.
