DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

I hope all of the mothers have a Happy Mothers Day.  If you haven't taken your mother or wife to dinner, you might think about doing that.  The least you can do is wish her a Happy Mother’s Day.

The 14 people who took the one day Technician Class Radio class in Parkersburg, on May 6th, have already received their licenses.  That's one of the quickest I've seen licenses being issued.  The licenses were issued on May 11th, only five days after taking their test.

I received an E-Mail and a couple Packet messages from Matt Gregg, WV8MAT. Matt has a Packet station in operation in Mason County.  He says the DIGI, and maybe the NODE is MASOWV, and the PBBS is PTPLWV.  He says the station has good paths to JACKWV, NICHWV, WIRTWV and WOODWV.

There was a new operator on Packet this week.  Nicolae Leu, N9LA, checked into the District 3/Local DAREN Net this evening.  Nic lives in Belpre, OH, just across the river from Parkersburg.  I received a Packet message from Nic asking me some question about the DAREN system, but I didn't see the message until he had already checked into the local net.  Maybe we'll see Nic checking into the State Wide DAREN Net this week.

The Parkersburg/Wood County area lost a couple Amateurs this past week.  Jim Palmer, K8BOT, passed away on Wednesday, May 10th, and Bob Smith, KB8RNE, passed away yesterday.  Jim was never on Packet Radio, but was very active on the HF frequencies, and with the PARK (Parkersburg Amateur Radio Klub), until his health starting failing.  Bob was a member of WCEC (Wood County Emergency Communications) and used to be very active with the group, and on Packet and the DAREN system for many years, but when his health starting failing he wasn't able to participate much with either.  I'm going to miss both of these operators.  I'd known Jim for over 50 years, and Bob for over 30 years.

There were 38 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week.
