DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

Not much to report this week, but I have been communicating with Matt Pooler, KD8CWV, from Parkersburg.  Matt told me he has been building a Terminal Node Controller that he purchased in kit form.  The name of the TNC is TNC-X.  In kit form you can purchase it for around $88.00 plus shipping.  The TNC operates in Kiss Mode.  The company that sells the unit says they now have Bluetooth which allows you to use it with your IPADS for APRS.  Matt sent me an E-Mail and said that he is now able to connect to WOODWV, and has also connected to Randy Thomas, K8KHW's, Winklink 2000 station SEO, and sent himself an E-Mail. Matt said he wasn't too interested in Packet Radio until he purchased and built the TNC-X.  You can learn more about the TNC-X by connecting to the website: www.tnc-x.com   This might be a way to get more Amateurs interested in Packet Radio.  I've sent Matt more information about the DAREN system, and I'm hoping to see him start checking into the State Wide DAREN Net, and the Local and District 3 ARES Net "DEC3", which is held on Sunday evenings.

Henry (Hank) Kenealy, K1DOS, sent me a Packet message requesting on how to connect into the State Wide DAREN Net, but before I got a chance to answer it, he had already checked in.  I'm happy to see more Amateurs getting involved with Packet and the DAREN system.  Maybe we can get the system growing again.

There were 34 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week.  Gene Roy, N8ER, who has been participating in the net since May 1, 1993, has completed 1200 check-ins.  And, Tricia Magyarosi, KC8VLI, who has been participating in the net since December 28, 2002, has completed 650 check-ins.  Both of these operators will be receiving their certificates.  There were two new check-ins to the net this week, and they were Henry (Hank) Kenealy, K1DOS, from Springfield, Va., and Ryan Woods, KD8ATF, from Fort Ashby, WV.  I want to welcome both of these operators to the DAREN system, and hope they participate in the net as often as possible.  There was one station that checked into the net again this week with the callsign of "NOCALL".  The station checked into the net at about 11:40 am yesterday.  If that stations doesn't see his or her call on this weeks Net Announcement, and thinks it may be them, let me know so that I can get their net participation records caught up.
