DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.

I'm going to be busy this coming week.  I'll be helping to provide the safety communications for the Wood County Middle School Cross Country races on Tuesday.  The races will start at 5:00pm and should be over by 6:00pm.  After the races I'll be going to the WCEC Business Meeting that will start at 7:00pm. But, before we can start the races, race officials would like for us to set up a canopy and computer equipment so they can announce the racers as they approach the Finish Line.  They want the canopy, because it looks like the weather is going to be rain.  After the races are over we will need to take all of the race equipment down, put it in the truck, and head for the meeting. But, before we can hold the meeting I need to get the minutes, agenda, and the financial report written up and make copies for the members.  On Wednesday, I will be attending an LEPC Meeting in Washington County, Ohio.  In my spare time I need to load up our trucks with all of the material for the Hamfest which will be next Saturday, October 11th.  I also have another meeting in Pleasants County on Thursday.  Then on Friday I need to take the tables to the 4-H camp grounds for the Hamfest, so I don't have much spare time this week.

I received an E-Mail from Joseph Lawrence, K9RFZ, who is the ARRL Section Manager for Indiana.  Joseph is looking for information to set up a State Wide Packet network they have been talking about for 20 years.  Some of his Packet experts are telling him that a single frequency network won't work due to the collision of Packet transmissions.  I sent him a copy of the History of DAREN, and let him know that it will work just fine, as long as the operators on the system don't do two things.  One is keep any Buy, Sale, and Trade Bulletin Boards off the system.  The other is to reduce the use of Digipeating to get through the system.  Joseph wants to use the ARRL GOTOMEETING Account and hold a teleconference, and have me explain how we make the DAREN system work here in West Virginia.  I'll let you know how the conference goes next week.

Don't forget the Parkersburg/Wood County Hamfest on Saturday, October 11.

There were 48 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week.  Tricia Magyarosi, who has been participating in the net since December 28, 2002, has completed 550 check-ins, and will be receiving her certificate.  Remington Sweitzer, KB3TXG, needs only one more check-in to make 200.
