DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.
Six members of the Wood County W5YI VE Team went to Jackson County to teach a one day Technician yesterday. The class was held at the 911 Communications Center. Eleven people took the class and seven passed the Technician Class test. One of those who passed the test is the Jackson County Emergency Services Director, Walt Smittle. Walt used to be the State Fire Marshall for West Virginia, but he is now the county OES Director. Walt has been interested in Amateur Radio for a long time, and has been wanting to get his license. It will be great to have another Emergency Services Director as an Amateur Radio operator.
Don't forget the West Virginia ARRL Convention which will be held this coming Saturday, August 17th. I won't be able to attend the convention again this year since it falls on the same day at the Parkersburg Homecoming and Half Marathon. Our communications group operates the BINGO games at the Homecoming and provides the communications for the Half Marathon. So our whole weekend will be tied up.
There were 42 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Terry Mills, KC8TUE, who's been participating in the net since October 19, 2002, has completed 500 check-ins. Jerry Sturm, KC8SIG, who's been participating in the net since May 9, 2009, has completed 200 check-ins. Both of these operators will be receiving their certificate. Jeffrey Hensley, WD4VA, needs only one more check-in to make 100. There was one operator who checked into the net with the callsign of "CALL". If you checked into the net around mid-night Friday Night/Saturday Morning and don't see your call on this week’s State Wide DAREN Net Announcement, and think it may have been you, let me know so that I can update your check-in records and give you the credit you deserve.
