DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.
I don't have much news this week. I have checked around the system to find something to write about, but no luck. The only thing I have is the State Wide DAREN Net Report. While writing about the net this week, I needed to do a little research from the old DAREN News. It was interesting reading the old news articles and how things have changed. The DAREN News started with the July 19, 1992 issue. I don't think all the issues of the DAREN News are on the www.wc8ec.org website, but they are available if someone wants them. If you have something to put in the DAREN News, sent it to me. That way I won't have to just babble on.
There were 45 check-ins again to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. There was one new station that checked into the net. The callsign was SV2AGW, which I thought might have connected through Randy Thomas, K8KHW's HF/VHF node. But when I did a search on the Internet, what I found was a website that provides Amateur Radio Packet and digital software. Then I thought that someone had a copy of the software they were using on Packet, and forgot to change the callsign in the software. If you are using an SV2AGW software, checked into checked into the State Wide DAREN Net around 4:58 pm on Friday, May 31st, and think it may have been you, let me know so that I can correct your check-in records. I want everyone who participates in the net to get the credit they deserve. I made a mistake a couple of months back and missed announcing the 900th check-in of Bob Tuckerman, W3RUA. Since I missed the check-in, I also missed printing up his certificate, and mailing it to him. Maybe I shouldn't say this, but he wanted his 900th Check-in Certificate so he could have it for 90th birthday. Bob came over to Parkersburg for the first Packet Radio class that I put together and taught, but for some reason I can't find the date, or any information about the class in the DAREN News. Bob was one of the reasons that we have Check-in Certificates. In 1995, I went to Pendleton County for a memorization of the 1985 flood that caused a lot of death and destruction. The flood was also the major reason for the beginning of the DAREN system. While at the memorization of the flood, Bob suggested there should be some kind of way to thank the Amateurs for participating in the State Wide DAREN Net. Thus, the Check-in Certificates were born. Now you know the rest of the story. I want to thank Bob and wish him a Happy 90th Birthday.
