DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.
Not much news this week. The Wood County group provided the safety communications for a 10K Road Race yesterday. Ten Amateurs were stationed around the race course with a couple of them at the Finish Line to spot the runners as they approached the Finish Line. The runner bib numbers were entered into the computer so the race announcer could announce who was finishing the race. A few years ago Lisa Hendershot, KB8UER, put together an XL Spreadsheet program that would allow you to search for the runner's bib number, and put the runner's bib number, name, city, and state on a remote computer monitor. All the race announcer had to do is read the information off the screen. The print out was made large enough to make it easy to read.
For those who have been reading the articles about printed circuit boards over the last couple of weeks, here some more information. Al Poland, K8AXW, and I have been communicating by E-Mail about some of the experiences we've had while building circuits and making printed circuit boards. I talked about adapting a cheap drill stand for my Dermal Tool. Al told me that Dermal makes a drill stand that works a lot better, since the platform goes up and down and does away with any wobble the homemade drill stand has. He says you can get #64 drill bits that are made from carbon steel from about any ACE Hardware store. Al also suggested that if you have, or are still using Ferric Chloride as your etching solution, to heat it to about 100F degrees and aerate the solution. He has a homemade etching tank that has a hose with holes in, connected to a fish tank aerator pump. Al says his set up cuts the etching time down from several minutes to just a few minutes. I want to thank Al for his added information. If you have any suggestions that might be helpful with etching printed circuit boards, or any Amateur related projects, let me know. They may be helpful to someone else who reads the DAREN News of WV.
There were only 36 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week. Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, who's been participating in the net since October 10, 1995, has completed 150 check-ins, and will be receiving his certificate. When I looked at the low amount of check-ins this week, I checked my back-up monitor list to make sure I hadn't missed anyone. Then I remembered that it was Dayton Hamfest weekend, and figured that some of the regular DAREN users may have been out of town. If you did check into the net, and don't see your call on this coming weeks State Wide DAREN Net Announcement that is posted, let me know. I don't want anyone to miss out on a Net Participation count.
