DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.

Monday wasn't a very good day for me.  At about 5:30 AM a loud crack of thunder rolled me out of bed.  I had been up at 4:00 am, and checked my E-Mail and went back to bed for a little while.  I didn't notice any problems until I went back to check my E-Mail again and found two of my computers with blank screens.  I found the power was off to the computers.  I went to check on the Uninterrupted Power Supplies and found they were dead.  After finding the UPS' dead, I started checking everything else.  I found that all three Packet stations, my 2 Meter Voice station, and an 800 MHz radio were all dead.  My DECT 6.0 Telephone system had also been hit.  One of my Packet computers was dead, and the monitor now has funny colors on it.  As the day went on, I found more electronic equipment had been damaged by the lightening hit.  The remote combination receiver/transmitter for the 147.255 MHz voice repeater was also damaged as well as the power supply that provides it power.  I'm getting some of the equipment replaced and back in operation.  I'm sure I'll find more equipment as the week goes on.

There were 61 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week.  Lisa Hendershot, KB8UER, who's been participating in the net since August 20, 1994, has completed 900 check-ins, and will be receiving her certificate.  Kendale Peterson, KD8QAK, son of Judy Peterson, N8UFQ, and nephew of Lisa Hendershot, needs only one more check-in to make 50.  I want to welcome Opie Nutter, KC8ZBQ, back to the DAREN system.  Opie has been missing from the DAREN Net since July 7, 2007.  There was one new check-in to the net this week and that was Nathen Goff, KC8ZHP, from Clarksburg.  I want to welcome Nathen to the DAREN system, and hope he checks into the State Wide DAREN Net as often as possible.  There was one station that checked into the net at about 7:30 PM Friday, with the callsign of "NOCALL".  If you checked into the net at about that time and don't see your callsign on this coming weeks State Wide DAREN Net Announcement, and think it may have been you, let me know so that I can correct your check-in record.  After taking a lightening hit last Monday, and spending two days in class Tuesday and Wednesday, I've got farther behind getting the Check-in Certificates printed up for those who have been waiting for them. This coming week I will be attending another two day Emergency Services class. Maybe I'll be able to get certificates printed up and sent out shortly.  I just want to thank all of the operators who participate in the State Wide DAREN Net and use the DAREN system.
