DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.

The News may be short this week.  I haven't received much news or information from anyone.  The only information I have is the activities that the Wood County Emergency Communication (WCEC) group had this weekend.  The WCEC group provided the Safety Communications for the Artsbridge Special Fair at WVU at Parkersburg, on Friday, for school students who have physical and mental handicaps.  The group also operated a Free Safety Coffee Break on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, on I-77 South of Parkersburg.  And, some members also did a shakedown of the new Health Department Communications Trailer which WCEC has been building for the last two months.  The trailer was taken to County Fair Grounds where a Large Animal Rescue Class was being held on Saturday and Sunday.  The group looked for, and worked on, problems with the radio and computer systems, and also did Show-N-Tell to the students while they were on breaks and at lunch.

Dick Wilt, K8TPH, sent me an E-Mail asking if anyone is operating the ALE400 Digital system that was described in the June issue of QST.  The system has a good signal to noise ratio, almost as good and maybe better, at times, than PSK31 because it is an ARQ system, and works automatically like Packet.  Dick would like to contact anyone using the system an set up a schedule to see if ALE400 would be feasible to use to run traffic throughout the state.  If you are operating ALE400, or know someone who is, contact Dick at: cn8ff@aol.com

There were only 50 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net.  Paul Derosky, K8GLA, who's been participating in the net since September 6, 1997, has completed 600 check-ins.
