DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.

I'm a little late getting the News out this week.  I've been having computer problems again.  I don't know what causes it to just die.  Sometimes when I turn it on, it comes up, and when I get ready to do something with it, it just shuts down.  Sometimes it doesn't even get to the main screen.  It did the same thing a few months ago.  Then when I would unplug everything and take it apart, and put it back together it would work.  I'm beginning to think that maybe one of the devices plugged into a USB port might be the problem.  Right now I have the computer opened up, laying on its side, and it seems to be working. Oh well, at least I was able to back up all the main files in case it dies and I can't get it to work.

I got an E-Mail from Wick Kirk, KC8RHO.  He said the River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross in Morgantown has requested assistance locating Amateur Radio operators in Marshall County.  Over the years local Amateurs have provided communications for the Marshall County Red Cross.  Because of the Amateurs passing away and other reasons the Red Cross has lost contact with the Amateurs in that County.  The River Valley Chapter is responsible for twelve counties, one of them being Marshall.  Wick wanted to know if there was an ARRL ARES Emergency Coordinator in Marshall County, but I had to tell him there was none assigned.  I would like to find someone in Marshall County who would like to take that job as the EC.  He told me the Marshall County Red Cross has a trailer and some kind of Amateur Radio equipment.  The Red Cross wants to set the trailer up as a communications trailer.  Wick said that he and Larry Wiley, KC8AYW, want to make a trip to Marshall County to check out the radio equipment.  He thinks that it may be a way to get Amateur Radio operators in that county active again.  He said the Red Cross really wants to get Amateur Radio involved.  If you know of anyone who might be interested in getting involved with the Marshall County project, you might contact Wick at his E-Mail address of: randskirk@westco.net

There were 56 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net.  Donnie Woodford, KC8YVR, who's been participating in the net since November 27, 2004, has completed 250 check-ins and will be receiving his certificate.  Lisa Hendershot, KB8UER, needs only one more check-in to make 800.  Randy Thomas, K8KHW, needs only one more check-in to make 400.  And, Paul Roy, N8PER, needs only one for check-in to make 150.
