DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.org website.
I was able to go to the Charleston Hamfest yesterday. I saw a few of the DAREN operators, but not very many. The Hamfest was crowded for the first hour or so, but then it thinned out so you could see what was there. I couldn't find anything that I couldn't do without, and I couldn't find the only things that I needed. I saw one Kantronics KPC-3, but I just didn't think I needed it.
I got an E-Mail from Paul Derosky, K8GLA, about the Hancock County NODE/PBBS of HANCWV/WEIRWV. He told me that he wasn't able to connect to the DAREN station. I thought the station might have been down since I wasn't able to connect to it last week to post the DAREN News and Net Announcement. If I'm not able to get connected to the backdoor of the station, I'll contact Roy Humes, N8RH, to see if he can help get it back in operation. Roy only lives a few miles from the station.
I talked to Joe Forren, ND4B, at the Hamfest, about the Greenbrier County NODE/PBBS of GREEWV/FAIRWV. Joe says he's having a little trouble with the station and would like to get the antenna a little bit higher. From time-to- time I have trouble connecting to the PBBS to post the DAREN News and Weekly Net Announcement.
Participation in the DAREN Net was down a little bit this week. Some of the normal operators might not have checked in due to the Hamfest. There were only 52 check-ins. Jerry Nelson, KD8HJN, who's been participating in the net since April 17, 1999, has completed 550 check-ins. Francis Mauser, WA8SDA, who's been participating in the net on and off since May 6, 2000, has completed 50 check-ins. Both of these operators will be receiving their certificate. Judy Peterson, N8UFQ, needs only one more check-in to make 900. John Johnston, KF8OM, needs only one more check-in to make 650. And, Allen Poland Jr., K8AXW, needs only one more check-in to make 50. There was one station that checked into the net at about 7:24 PM on Saturday, with the callsign of "NOCALL" If you don't see your callsign on this week's Net Announcement, and think it may have been you, let me know so that I can update your participation records. I added Paul Derosky, K8GLA, to the list since he wasn't able to connect to the DAREN system via his closest NODE, which is HANCWV, and he sent me an E-Mail.
