SUBJECT: AUTOMATIC SSN TO FRN GOING AWAY
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced the automatic registration of a Federal Registration Number (FRN) using the Social Security Number (SSN) on all new radio licenses will be going away. At the present time when a new FCC radio license is issued the SSN on the application automatically registers an FRN number to the license. In the future that practice will be going away. The FCC will only process FCC applications that has an FRN number.
In the future if anyone who wants to take a new Amateur Radio License test, will first need to register in the FCC Commission Registration System (CORES) and apply for an FRN number. The SSN will no longer be allowed on the radio license application.
The FCC hasn't set a date yet as to when the SSN to FRN registration will be going away. If you know of anyone wanting to take an Amateur Radio test, for a NEW license, advise them to register for an FRN number. This must be done before an Amateur Radio Exam can be given. They can register for an FRN number by using the web address: https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/userLogin.do
