ARES BULLETIN NR 16.02               DATE: January 10, 2016
SUBJECT: ONLY THE FACTS

During any disaster, emergency, or event, be sure to report only what you have actually seen with your own two eyes.  Don't report what you have heard from someone else, unless you know they can be trusted with the information.  If you report what you have heard, and it turns out not to be correct, you are the one who looks like a fool.

If, and when you have to report something from someone else, be sure you log who gave you the information and the time you received it.  If you have to relay the information on to an emergency center or official, make sure that you tell them you are just relaying the information.  Pass all of the information on, including from who you received it from, and when you received it.  If it turns out the information you passed on is not correct, you won't be the one looking like a fool.

When you relay any information, don't leave anything out, and don't add, or change anything.  If the person you are relaying the information to needs verification or additional information they can, and may ask for it.  Just relay what you were told and where it came from.

Give only the facts don't make it sound worse than it is.
