SUBJECT: WHAT IS A REPEATER SYSTEM?
Most VHF and UHF voice repeaters are just what they say they are. They are devices that repeat any voice that comes in the receiver section of the unit. There are some repeaters that are more then just a repeater. A repeater that has more than one receiver or transmitter can be called a system.
Repeater systems are more complicated then regular repeaters. They have more circuitry that needs to be adjusted and balanced to make them work better. Some repeater systems are equipped with several remote receivers. Repeater systems are built to try to make sure they can cover as much area as possible. Most repeaters are not designed to use Handheld coverage over a large area.
Most repeaters are built so that mobile units and base stations can communicate over large areas, which are fine, but emergency communicators aren't able to take their high or medium power mobile units to all locations. By having more then one receiver in a repeater system, handheld coverage can be increased.
Repeater systems can have a lot more problems, but they are accepted to have a large area of coverage. (Idea for this bulletin from Brent Rice, KD8DLX)
