WOOD COUNTY BULLETIN NR 15.18          DATE: May 3, 2015
SUBJECT: RADIO SILENCE

What is Radio Silence?  Radio Silence is when all forms of Radio communications are stopped being made.  Even if you are using a Cellular Telephone, it should be stopped.  Remember Cellular Telephones are using radio frequencies.

Why would you want to stop communicating?  A couple of reasons would be to keep any information from being let out that might be sensitive, and the best way to keep it from getting out is to cease all forms of communications until what needs to be released can be sorted out.

Another reason for Radio Silence is the possibility of radio transmissions interfering with sensitive radio controlled devices for use in bomb deactivating.  Some bomb deactivating equipment can be made uncontrollable or accidentally triggered in the presents of some Radio Frequencies.

When the word is passed that Radio Silence is to be observed, let whoever you are in contact with know that you can no longer transmit until further notice.  While observing Radio Silence those who are not in the affected area should monitor for traffic going into the affected area and hold it until communications can be re-established.

If you're connected to another station by Packet Radio, disconnect from that station, and turn off your radio so that traffic will not be sent accidentally to your station, causing it to transmit.  It will be hard to not want to transmit during Radio Silence, but it could be your radio transmission that could cause something to go wrong.
