WOOD COUNTY BULLETIN NR 14.30           DATE: July 27, 2014
SUBJECT: ANOTHER USE FOR VOX

In the ARES Bulletin 14.29 the operation of VOX or Voice Operated Transmit was described.  Some of the newer Amateur Radio Mobile, Base, or Hand Held Transceivers have built-in VOX.  The VOX should be able to be used for other modes of communications, such a digital.

With so many Free Digital Soundcard Programs ' why not take advantage of the VOX that may be built into your transceiver. All you should have to do is place a shielded cable between the output of your computer Soundcard Jack and the Microphone Jack of the transceiver.  Then place a shielded cable between the transceiver Speaker Jack and the Input Jack of your computer Soundcard.

Search the Internet and find the Soundcard Program of your choice and you should be able to be on the air using your favorite Digital mode.  The build-in VOX on your Hand Held radio can put you on Portable Packet Radio in a very short time.  All you need to put together is the proper shielded cable and you are ready to go.  You don't need any other equipment such as a Terminal Node Controller (TNC) or a Transmitter Soundcard Device.

There's no reason that you can't be on Packet Radio.  Give it a try, you might just like it.
