WOOD COUNTY BULLETIN NR 12.12           DATE: March 18, 2012
SUBJECT: BUG OUT KIT

If you had to evacuate your home right now due to severe weather of flash flooding, what would you take with you?  This is something everyone should think about.  The National Weather Service and the American Red Cross are always advising people to be prepared to leave you home at a moment’s notice.

There are several questions that you need to ask yourself.  A few of them are asked here.  Where would you go?  How would you get there?  What would you take with you?  How would you communicate with others?  How long will you be gone.

Most emergency agencies suggest that you be prepared to take care of yourself for at least three days.  How much food and water would you need to live on for three days?  How much clothes would you need for that length of time.  How about keeping warm and dry if the weather is bad, and do you have a way to make a bed or sleep out of the weather?  Don't forget your medicine if you have to take it.     Depending on how long you will have to take care of yourself will determine how much material you will have to take with you. Do you have a knap sack or backpack that you can use to keep you supplies in.  How about a tot box or something that you can carry easily.

These are just a few things you should sit down and think about while it's calm.  Get several members in the family to discuss what they would need and ask the questions above in case they had to evacuate in a moment’s notice.
