WOOD COUNTY BULLETIN NR 11.45           DATE: November 6, 2011
SUBJECT: ANOTHER WINTER REMINDER.

We were lucky that we didn't get the snow storm the East and Northeast got, but that doesn't mean we couldn't have.  This is only November and winter is still a little over a month away, but there have been times that we've had measurable snow in November.

I'm not going to be one who says we are in for a bad winter, or an early snow means a mild winter.  Predicting what kind of winter should be left up to the National Weather Service (NWS).     The point I want to make, is that winter is getting closer, so we should have all of our gear, or equipment, at hand.  You know, from some of our other bulletins, winter clothing, cold weather gear, and so on.  The weather that we have already had should be a mild reminder of what could be, except, much more.

I don't like the fact that many people end-up without electricity, heat, and possibly food, but that's what happens in the winter.  Travel during an emergency may become impossible, unless you are prepared with tire chains.  Even with 4-wheel drive, one can become stranded in deep snow.  As stated many times before, be winter wise.  Think of a family plan, write it down, and follow it wisely.

This is a good time to get prepared.  Make sure we have a backup power source for our radio system.  Even if we are unable to go to the Emergency Communication Center somewhere during the emergency, we may be able to provide an important role with communications.  So keep those radios going.  Also keep essentials around the house, like canned food, extra water, and a way to keep warm if the commercial power is interrupted.  Just some thoughts!
