WOOD COUNTY BULLETIN NR 11.42 DATE: October 16, 2011
SUBJECT: WHAT TO REPORT?
Many radio operators whether Amateur, Public Safety, or even Citizens Band, often happen upon such things as Car Wrecks, Fires, and other situations that need immediate attention. When this happens, usually more information is given than is necessary. Give only the facts, such as What, When and Where. How and Why it happened does not matter when reporting the an incident.
The Public Safety Operator or 911 Dispatcher taking the report needs only the most important information so he or she can get the appropriate Responders (Fire, Police, Ambulance, or Rescue) enroot.
If you are the radio operator making the original report relaying thru another operator, who is calling it in by Telephone, give only the necessary information, and wait for a response, or request for additional information. Don't, for any reason, leave the frequency that you made the initial report on, until it has been cleared by the receiving station.
Don't keep giving further reports without a request. The person making the Telephone call may have the Public Safety Operator or 911 Dispatcher on the telephone, relaying your information. Any other transmissions may interfere with their conversation, possibly causing mis-information.
If you are the person that is relaying the information to a Public Safety Operator or 911 Dispatcher, be sure to Identify yourself, and the method you received the information. Give only the necessary information, and be sure to give a telephone number you can be reached at, in case further information is needed.
Don't keep the Operator or 911 Dispatcher on the Telephone any longer than necessary. After relaying the report, then get any other information from the original reporter, you feel may be needed. After a substantial amount of time, and you have received no call back, make sure to clear with the reporting operator.
