WV ARES® BULLETIN NR 10.44 DATE: October 31, 2010
SUBJECT: ALL YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET
I know you've heard the saying about carrying all your eggs in one basket. The same has to do with your communications. You don't want to rely on just one communications facility or power source.
You need to have a way to transfer any traffic that you have to an alternate communications system if the primary one becomes inoperative. The same has to do with your equipment power source. If you lose your main power source, you need to have a way of powering the communications equipment you need in an emergency.
With winter on its way, now is the time to think of things that could go wrong which may cause your communications facility to fail. Your radio could just quit working, your commercial power might go off due to a tree breaking a power line, or your antenna might get destroyed due to a heavy snow storm.
With a few good days that you can work outside, now is the time to get your emergency communications and power ready for winter. Think of things that could cause you to lose your communications with others, and figure a way around them.
