WV ARES BULLETIN NR 10.06               DATE: February 7, 2010
SUBJECT: ARRL NUMBERED RADIOGRAMS

The ARRL has spent many years formulating a message form called RADIOGRAM.  To shorten the length of a message, the ARRL and the Nation Traffic System created a system of using numbers to represent commonly used and lengthy messages.  The system is called ARRL Numbered RADIOGRAMS.

This numbering system can save transmission time and create a bit of confidentiality.  This bulletin won't go into all the RADIOGRAMS Numbers, but will only mention a few.  A list of the Group One numbers For Possible "Relief Emergency" Use.  Group Two numbers are for Routine Messages.  The message numbers should be stated, and then spelled out phonetically.  “ONE - Oscar November Echo, SIX - Sierra India Xray”, etc.

In the text of the message, all message numbers should exhibit the letters ARL before each spelled number, Example; ARL SIXTEEN.  ARL SIXTEEN is short, but means; "Property damage very severe in this area".

When using ARL Numbered RADIOGRAMS in messages you should insert the letters ARL in the preamble with the check number. If your message text reads; ARL ONE ARL TWO, your check would be ARL and the number 4 (ARL 4).  This means the message contains ARL Numbered RADIOGRAMS, and that the text count is 4.

A copy of the Numbered RADIOGRAMS can be found on the American Radio Relay League website: http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/forms/fsd3.html   A list of the numbered definition should be kept close in case you take a message with the numbers.

Before delivering any ARRL RADIOGRAM, with ARL Numbers, be sure to convert the number, or numbers, to the meaning of that number.  Never deliver a RADIOGRAM message to the addressee without first converting it to plain language.
