ARES DISTRICT 3 BULLETIN NR 08.10       DATE: March 9, 2008
SUBJECT: BRING YOUR OWN FOOD AND WATER

If a disaster hits and you are asked to help, would you be prepared?  You might have your communications equipment ready to go on a moment’s notice, but what if you are going to be needed for two or three days, and maybe longer.  If you are working at a disaster location there's a possibility there may not be any food or water available.  Those who have asked you to help may not have food and water when you get there, so you should think about bringing your own.  It may be days before food and water supplies are able to arrive.  Always keep at least a three day supply of food and water with you no matter where you report.  Bottled water is easy to store and transport since most of it comes in small plastic jars.  Canned food can be stored for weeks, even months.  Get the kind of food that you like to eat and keep it ready to grab when you get ready to leave.  Just make sure you have a way of opening the cans if they don't have zip top lids. Saltine crackers can be kept for several weeks and will take the place of bread which may not be available.  A three day supply of these items won't take up much room.  You may not be living like a king, but what you bring may keep you from going hungry.
