DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: firstname.lastname@example.org. A Statewide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.
Sammy Mercer, N8SVX, and I used the topographical maps for the elevations and distances between Bill Davidson, N8JXO's, house and Joe Thomas, N8MEV's house. This is one of the first two links that we are trying to put into operation on the HSMM (High Speed Multimedia) system. It looks like there is a path between the two houses which are only two and one half miles apart. Now we will try to get a 2.4 GHz signal path using the some of the equipment for the HSMM system. While we've been talking about the HSMM system with some of the other Amateurs in the area, Tim Miller, WB8MOI, who owns Miller Communications here in Wood County, told us that he had a bunch of used 2.4 GHz Parabolic dish antennas that we could have, to put on the system where they are needed. He got the used dishes when he removed some old point-to-point radio systems. We picked up the used dishes yesterday and have been sorting them out. Some of the dishes had been used on some 5.8 GHz systems so we can't use them, yet. The HSMM system that we're trying to put together is based on the AREDN (Amateur Radio Emergency Data Network) system. The HSMM system can handle almost all communication modes that are handled by the Internet. Some HSMM systems in the United States are also connected to the Internet. We're hoping to extend the DAREN system into areas of West Virginia that has no DAREN coverage.
There were 33 check-ins to the Statewide DAREN Net again this week. My Daughter Cathy Wotring, KC8DJJ, who has been participating in the net since April 27, 1996, has completed 1250 check-ins will be receiving her certificate. Donnie Woodford, KC8YVR, needs only one more check-in to make 750. Ken "Cappy" Caplinger, WV8KDC, needs only one more check-in to make 150.
